Perfect for beginners, this wheel throwing class is a hands-on introduction to working with clay on the pottery wheel. Students will learn the fundamentals of throwing while building confidence creating their own functional ceramic pieces from start to finish. Along the way, we’ll cover essential techniques like trimming, handle attachment, and surface design techniques, and more. Expect a relaxed, creative environment where you can slow down, get your hands dirty, and experience the joy of making something from scratch. There’s nothing quite like drinking your morning coffee from a mug you made yourself!

Price includes instruction, unlimited studio clay, tools, glazes and firings.
Students have access to one open studio session per week to independently practice skills learned in class. Students have access to open studio between weeks 2-5 of their class.
Students can expect to complete approximately 3–4 finished pieces during the course.
Classes are limited to 8 people.
Pieces measuring 12 inches or larger in any direction will incur additional firing fees. Oversized work is charged at $0.04 per cubic inch for bisque firing and $0.04 per cubic inch for glaze firing, per piece.
Our classes are designed to support learning, creativity, and skill-building rather than high-volume production. We encourage students to slow down, experiment, and enjoy the process of making by hand.
We strongly recommend students to attend the first and last two classes of the semester.

Cancellations must be made 1 week before the first day of class to be eligible for a partial refund ($25 cancellation fee). Absences are non-refundable.

Meet your instructor

Matt is a multi-hyphenate creative based in Brooklyn who specializes in wheel-thrown pottery. His love for clay flourished in high school, where he took every ceramics course possible until he ran out and had to begin his own studio membership at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA. Continuing to throw into adulthood at various community studios across Brooklyn, he refined his skills to center around varieties of functional ware. A major hobby then became a full-time opportunity after encountering corporate layoffs and taking his ceramic practice to the next level back where a lot of his love for the craft started - GoggleWorks! Matt became a studio assistant tech and staff instructor of wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery, all while selling his own work online and at art markets all over the Northeast. Now back in Brooklyn, Matt is overjoyed to continue his ceramic practice at Pyra, both independently as a founding member and as an instructor across multi-week courses and Try Nights!

What is included in a class?

Unlimited clay, use of studio tools, firings, Open Studio time, and access to our back yard are all included!

How many pieces will I get out of the classes?

You can expect to complete approximately 3–4 finished pieces.. These courses are designed for practice instead of production.

What if I can’t attend all the classes?

We completely understand that life happens and you can’t always make it to class! That said, we strongly recommend that students attend the first and last two classes. If you miss some classes in the middle, no sweat! You can utilize Open Studio time to catch up.

How does Open Studio work?

Open Studio is a time for students to practice ceramics independently outside of weekly class sessions.Students have access to Open Studio time between weeks 2 and 5 of the semester. Open Studio is held on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. Registered students will receive info on how to sign up for Open Studio after the first class.
